Pinterest inspired Post 2Hey guys! This is the second post of my pinterest inspired classroom posts! I hope you enjoy! Last year I created an I Can Board that I really liked. However over the summer we found out that we would no longer be departmentalizing and so I needed to reconfigure some of my boards. Here is the link to last years board. <a href="http://mcdonaldgrade4.blogspot.com/2015/08/updates-and-i-can-bulletin-board.html" target="_blank">Click Here! </a><br />

<div style="border-image: none;">
This is the new board I went with. I didn't change much except now I have 4 picture frames instead of 2, I changed the paper in the picture frame, and I gave the picture the illusion that they were being hung by the string. (The string is really just decoration, it was hung using command strips.) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMT10naOvrh5Y-wR7xS6aioJAhouXu0Fj2fZvXWnztNhs7qsFhxo8YW1784NXjzDQtQHqGkF8yCWEXz9N8zaa56a9l3fMSjTjZYcCvs0quuo2u1EjwhHgM4VbRZlpkJIyDWRlCeVWfYP0/s1600/IMG_5427.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMT10naOvrh5Y-wR7xS6aioJAhouXu0Fj2fZvXWnztNhs7qsFhxo8YW1784NXjzDQtQHqGkF8yCWEXz9N8zaa56a9l3fMSjTjZYcCvs0quuo2u1EjwhHgM4VbRZlpkJIyDWRlCeVWfYP0/s400/IMG_5427.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="border-image: none;">
The red background is fabric from Hobby Lobby. The teal and brown board I got from a local teacher supply store. The picture frames are from the Dollar Tree. The I Can Banner was adapted from a School Girl Style Banner that I edited. </div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="border-image: none;">

<div style="border-image: none;">
I was really pleased with my results! Do you have an I Can board in your room? I'd love for you to leave pictures in the comments! </div>

Over the next couple posts I want to share with you my pinterest inspired classroom ideas! Today, I want to show you my new class jobs board. This year I am changing from departmentalized 5th grade math to self contained. I had to change my classroom from being solely math centered to something more generalized. Our county really encourages us to use class jobs to help our students to become better leaders so I needed a class jobs board. I also have very limited/small bulletin board space! <br />
<br />
I was inspired by this post: <a href="http://www.bloglovin.com/frame?post=1327624935&group=0&frame_type=a&blog=2679652&link=aHR0cDovL2NsdXR0ZXJmcmVlY2xhc3Nyb29tLmJsb2dzcG90LmNvbS8yMDEzLzA3L3RpcHMtZm9yLWNyZWF0aW5nLWFuZC1tYW5hZ2luZy5odG1s&frame=1&click=0&user=0" target="_blank">Clutter Free Classroom </a><br />
<br />
So here is my version of a Class Jobs Board...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGIO8zur0hX87k5fmyxVUd0oN5Vls_p0qWVZh5rZewuo6SbSBEQc__O8VUm9NqS1nBs1X6IScy4a7IhtOdywutU3121AcHjOPZfiadNaePLKDFGO_dQjd3MegxXopjEQm7tXK0IwRGcOo/s1600/CplQ4zZVYAIu9To.jpg_large.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGIO8zur0hX87k5fmyxVUd0oN5Vls_p0qWVZh5rZewuo6SbSBEQc__O8VUm9NqS1nBs1X6IScy4a7IhtOdywutU3121AcHjOPZfiadNaePLKDFGO_dQjd3MegxXopjEQm7tXK0IwRGcOo/s320/CplQ4zZVYAIu9To.jpg_large.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I used burlap for my back ground, library pockets, popsicle sticks for the student names, and the jobs banner is edited from schoolgirlstyle.com. <br />
<br />
I don't have many classroom jobs, but the ones I have make my classroom run more efficiently!<br />
These are my jobs<br />
- Car Hop: Goes to my car when I forget something.. or need something heavy carried in :-) <br />
- Paper Filer: Files papers of student work<br />
-Copy Cat: Helps make my copies<br />
- Water Wizard: Re-fills my water cup<br />
-Point Police: Carries the behavior binder to specials & cafeteria <br />
-Lunch Lady: Takes the lunch count<br />
-Computers: Turns on and off the computers<br />
-Merry Maids: helps make sure room is clean at the end of the day<br />
-Pencil Pro: sharpens class pencils <br />
-Librarian: Keeps class library neat and choose class books from the library <br />
<br />
I'd love to see what your class jobs board looks like! Leave a picture in the comments!<br />

<br />
Hey guys!! Today, I want to share with you one of the new things I tried this year for back to school. In years past, students came for a full day the first day of school. This allowed me plenty of time during the day to take up each child's supplies individually. However, this year we started school with a "Meet the Teacher Day/Drop Off School Supplies Day" which was an abbreviated day.<br />
<br />
Some of the obstacles I faced in trying to decide what to do were... 1) We are departmentalized in 5th grade and we were going to switch on the 1st full day. This left me very little time to put supplies away on the 1st day. 2) We have tables and share schools supplies, so I needed to store most of the supplies while leaving a few out for use.<br />
<br />
I decided that I wanted all the supplies put up on the 1/2 day, so that on the 1st full day we were ready to begin. However, with it being a drop in day, I didn't want to repeat the directions on how to put up the supplies 30 different times for every child. I decided to set up boxes around the room that students would put their supplies in. I also put the instructions on the board, so that all I needed to do after meeting the parent and student is direct them to the directions on the board.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXmBtHeiBWekedZI6PwS67bLCvAew4_NDiWBnRZ0wj04VYrEscDkY6ILQ8MzFLDJU4gscOWsX2iskS5Nls3drUQXz7ypqGI7BCzVBOtjy6FJaFB7GEEJkIvcak8aZpRzGpmjAIBJB6WRs/s1600/photo%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXmBtHeiBWekedZI6PwS67bLCvAew4_NDiWBnRZ0wj04VYrEscDkY6ILQ8MzFLDJU4gscOWsX2iskS5Nls3drUQXz7ypqGI7BCzVBOtjy6FJaFB7GEEJkIvcak8aZpRzGpmjAIBJB6WRs/s320/photo%25281%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Here are the boxes I set up. I used the boxes that my workbooks came in instead of spending money on cute boxes. After the Meet the Teacher Day was over, I stored the supplies where they belonged and recycled the boxes. I did use a few baskets that I already had for smaller supplies like glue and pencil erasers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieOnHKEauWQBsqj5r5dCs4BwIuzpJp_jH21crY4ln2e8vCoD2O94jcs6HfsrLJHvEpe30W9U8pdL3Hs0PZaGdxIZLQqwCfGMcqdGd2_jXqMobNd4_MV0ozBejcAFPDcPdoULOHLNwjI8g/s1600/Picture+for+Blog.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieOnHKEauWQBsqj5r5dCs4BwIuzpJp_jH21crY4ln2e8vCoD2O94jcs6HfsrLJHvEpe30W9U8pdL3Hs0PZaGdxIZLQqwCfGMcqdGd2_jXqMobNd4_MV0ozBejcAFPDcPdoULOHLNwjI8g/s320/Picture+for+Blog.png" width="320" /></a></div>
These are the instructions I had on the board.<br />
<br />
Over all I felt that this approach was very successful. It was super easy to put all the supplies in the correct storage area after the Meet the Teacher Day. It allowed me to have all the supplies ready for the 1st full day, without taking time out of that day! I did find that some parents and students didn't follow the directions and I still needed to explain the process to them. I've thought about next year, on top of having the directions on the board, giving them a check list of things to do. That way they have a copy in their hand.<br />
<br />Have you used something similar for putting supplies away? OR Have another way completely? Leaving a comment, I'd love to hear your ideas!!<br />

Hey guys! So I have made it almost three full weeks of 5th grade! I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed it! I'm so excited to be focusing only on math, my favorite subject, and getting to know my students. We hit the ground running by learning procedures and expectations while also working on our fluency multiplication standard! We did a Kahoot.it quiz to review expectation and procedures! --- The kids LOVED this and are BEGGING me to do it again! I can't wait to find something else to use it for---<br />
<br />

We have also started into our new math series that will help us prepare for the new state test TNReady. We are currently working on multiplying and dividing with powers of 10! Here is my first Anchor Chart for the year! --- Actually it's my first anchor chart ever!!--- <br />

So life has been CRAZY!!! After 6 years in 4th grade I found out this summer that I was moving to 5th grade math. I am very excited about this new adventure, but it has thrown me for a bit of a loop. I had to learn new curriculum and move classrooms, in what felt like a very short amount of time! I just finished my room and will do a blog "show and tell" of my new accommodations. Here is a preview...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSGjMK8chOhSL8GTDpiUIyZ1wJUA_24K1BN7ZGx2TqEeIHwSVVbZfT8ZMjmAmFKpNF8Rup_3KIJtrnAgmLnN3xPLzH4kMijFwieoO5fgldCqw_zg77n1PapHZse_-3_M9mdSlAhXmkdbU/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSGjMK8chOhSL8GTDpiUIyZ1wJUA_24K1BN7ZGx2TqEeIHwSVVbZfT8ZMjmAmFKpNF8Rup_3KIJtrnAgmLnN3xPLzH4kMijFwieoO5fgldCqw_zg77n1PapHZse_-3_M9mdSlAhXmkdbU/s320/photo+2.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Since I had to move classrooms, it has given me an opportunity to try some things I haven't had a chance to yet. For example, I have wanted to make an I Can Bulletin Board for my I Can statements and standards for 2 years. I found a super cute one on pinterest from <a href="http://3rdgradepad.blogspot.com/2014/06/monday-made-it-monday-meet-uppinterest.html">3rd Grade Pad</a> that I loved and had to try it! I only teach math, so I just used a small bulletin board, but here is how it turned out! <br />

Today, I have the opportunity to review a new math program called Preptoon! I am very excited to share this website with you! Next week, we will be doing a giveaway for 1 FREE year subscription to Preptoon, so make sure you come back to enter! Let's get started...<br />
<br />
Preptoon is an online math resource for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade. The website uses engaging videos to help students better understand math concepts. Below you will find some of the features that I really enjoyed!<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Everything is very organized. You can easily find a video that goes with what you are teaching. You can search by grade and by topic, for example, 5th grade Measurement. You can even search for a specific standard under the Common Core Standards tab. Being organized is highly important to me! I don't want to spend a ton of time trying to find one video to use with my students. Preptoon quickly allows me to find a video that is relevant to what I am currently teaching. </li>
</ul>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In this picture you can see tabs at the top, which allows for easy searching. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUrli1R1BUK-VJzp3i_BZ8ao58lXI5puYaHp4J-MzPGTC95xT5tSallZDRd6VlczkLORB-4KVA7I3tU6aIZNZGChng87UeVXMomN5MqRYE2I4DQrT6LE_T2dgdqTrxJsXn6RxO4wJy7ww/s1600/Revew+2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="273" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUrli1R1BUK-VJzp3i_BZ8ao58lXI5puYaHp4J-MzPGTC95xT5tSallZDRd6VlczkLORB-4KVA7I3tU6aIZNZGChng87UeVXMomN5MqRYE2I4DQrT6LE_T2dgdqTrxJsXn6RxO4wJy7ww/s400/Revew+2.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is a video I found after searching 5th grade measurement. I love that the standard is clear! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<ul>
<li>The videos are animated and I think my students would enjoy them. My only complaint is I wish the narrator had a little more inflection in her voice. This is very nit picky coming from an overly animated reader! (I tend to have 20 different voices and all kinds of hand motions while reading.) The videos are based on real life situations. This is great for helping students to understand how they will use math in the real world! </li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYPnI0C9fumcoOsxBJRZsnwkcbKyYbftv-GBCKsloh4xV4qZ6dTMcQuH43Ie7OXsEfuJPxcUNeBZ_6gaBbNiE3G8tps0D2WjuspiKyRtICyIKUEdCu6xOs3MsJH11vb56GxFnjy_L1t_c/s1600/Review+3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="171" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYPnI0C9fumcoOsxBJRZsnwkcbKyYbftv-GBCKsloh4xV4qZ6dTMcQuH43Ie7OXsEfuJPxcUNeBZ_6gaBbNiE3G8tps0D2WjuspiKyRtICyIKUEdCu6xOs3MsJH11vb56GxFnjy_L1t_c/s400/Review+3.png" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is the beginning of a video, you can see the standard is easily visible again! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<ul>
<li>The video pauses every so often to ask questions. Sometimes these questions will be multiple choice and sometimes they will be fill in the blank. It then gives students instant feedback as to what the correct answer is! I love that it asks both kinds of questions and I love that it gives instant feedback! I think feedback is vital to students making and correcting mistakes! </li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_377Q0_4d40itZXXcqBWzM7NNzFblVGgaJXjdm4P6fG5lw0jaASzgIP8fASiMj-TzoMlBe_ovaQl1EF07IKrw7ueLvkIiuC7llALBlcQn3P5XDEiVlFngSDnOpA3EpC7e0Bsu5DZGkoQ/s1600/REview+5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="166" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_377Q0_4d40itZXXcqBWzM7NNzFblVGgaJXjdm4P6fG5lw0jaASzgIP8fASiMj-TzoMlBe_ovaQl1EF07IKrw7ueLvkIiuC7llALBlcQn3P5XDEiVlFngSDnOpA3EpC7e0Bsu5DZGkoQ/s400/REview+5.png" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is an example of a question the video's would ask. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<ul>
<li>After a video is completed they can be asked additional questions to help make the math concept more concrete in their mind! </li>
</ul>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Over all I was highly pleased with the program. You could use this whole class and discuss the questions together, or you can create individual student accounts and have them do the videos independently. If you create student accounts you can see student responses to questions! This program is interactive with students, engaging to watch, and is highly aligned to common core standards. I can't wait to use this in my classroom this year! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Now What? <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx4DUBl2g6qGYqk61zBpQ0bX4eeJy-k8qBcXHBdg3OOt9beZWWG7BptMh97mAIDWxr38BNzNZTJ4rCRLVMm-SxAfEYGMiXFKQk7JC5hyr7InzILkzOSsIYw3D5WbVmKRwy8zNaHL_wiY8/s1600/Blog+Picture.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx4DUBl2g6qGYqk61zBpQ0bX4eeJy-k8qBcXHBdg3OOt9beZWWG7BptMh97mAIDWxr38BNzNZTJ4rCRLVMm-SxAfEYGMiXFKQk7JC5hyr7InzILkzOSsIYw3D5WbVmKRwy8zNaHL_wiY8/s1600/Blog+Picture.png" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Hey guys! I don't know about you, but recently I have been watching Hack My Life on TruTV. If you weren't aware I am a major nerd and love education/informational TV. (Not to mention my Doctor Who and Sherlock obsession!) On Hack My Life they do a segment called "Now What" where they give different scenarios of hacks. So today I ask you.. So you've lost your voice and you're a teacher, NOW WHAT? <br />
<br />
When your a teacher, your voice is one of the most important tools. When it's gone, it can be very difficult to instruct, question, and to maintain good behavior management. I know I can't just take 5 days off to "rest my voice" like my doctor always seems to recommend. Adapting is the name of the game and here are a few things I do differently when I've lost my voice. <br />
<br />
<br />
<em>Getting Their Attention:</em> <br />
On a normal day I love a call and response attention getter such as the famous "Class, Class..Yes,Yes". When I've lost my voice this seems nearly impossible! In this case, I love to use a service bell. I ding my bell twice as a replacement of my normal "class, class". This works well because it's loud enough that they can hear it. <br />
<br />
You could also use preemptive measures by not using a call and response attention getter. You could implement the clap call and response, where the teacher claps and the students echo the clapping pattern. If this was already in place, the teacher wouldn't need to change anything. I personally just prefer a vocal call and response! <br />
<br />
We try to make quick transitions between one activity to another. Our goal is to be at our new destination and ready in 7 counts, but we have to 10 counts before we get in trouble. (See The Essential 55 by Ron Clark) I usually count out loud the numbers, but I have been known to just count using my hand. I use American Sign Language to count to 10 because it only requires 1 hand. The kids love it, and I don't have to strain my voice to count! <br />
<br />
<em>Behavior Management:</em> <br />
Class Dojo is a great behavior management tool that works whether you have a voice or not! Some things I love particularly when I don't have a voice are;<br />
It gives a noise when you give or take away a point which reminds the kids about <br />
their behavior. <br />
<br />
I can display it on the ActivBoard so students can monitor how they are doing.<br />
<br />
I can give or take points on my ipad and it shows up on the active board.<br />
<br />
One thing I love, whether I have a voice or not, is that when I'm teaching, Class <br />
Dojo is not up on my board, but will still make a noise when I give or take points <br />
Students have no idea who I am giving or taking points from, but they automatically<br />
begin self monitoring their behavior! <br />
<br />
<br />
<em>Teaching:</em><br />
When you don't have a voice it's a great time to use peer tutors. I love using peer tutors often anyway, but it comes in handy to let them help me "teach" their neighbor the concepts! <br />
<br />
<br />
These are just a few ways that might be able to help you! Don't forget to drink lots of hot tea! Do you have any hacks that help you get through a few days with no voice? <br />
<br />

Today I want to share with you something new I am going to try this year. In years past, I have used popsicle sticks to randomly call on students to answer questions. I use them a lot when I am doing review, specifically in Science and Social Studies. I love pulling sticks because the students never know who I'm going to call on, which causes them to pay closer attention. The only downfall I have is that I don't want to continually pull the same stick and have the same student answer multiple answer, or miss a stick and a student not have a turn. So I started laying the stick to the side once a student got an answer correct. This lead to another problem... Once the student answered a question correctly they quit paying attention because they knew I wouldn't be pulling their stick again. Sigh... This ruins the whole purpose of the review in the first place! However, I believe I have found the solution!<br />
<br />
I have added colored dots on both ends of the popsicle stick using a sharpie: one blue, one red. (I choose these colors because it's the color scheme of my room. I'm a bit OCD about matchy matchy!) I'll begin by having all sticks having the same color sticking out. Once a student answers a question correctly I will turn their stick over so that the second color is showing. This way I know who has answered a question and who has not. It also causes students to continue paying attention after they have answered a question, since their stick is still in the cup and could still be pulled.<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheNWgd7IqpEu1HtgdKS6bzbFsFKV_xr8J_OKJXoc6l1DD-uVjhWxOPG-i1BBibAYBwmuUov38zrTMjV2PMhbxLPzRwpvAWC4xOjNLvYPcbAmZ4WynbwGNIGXtuhjEmL-xBjNzV1TQSU-E/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheNWgd7IqpEu1HtgdKS6bzbFsFKV_xr8J_OKJXoc6l1DD-uVjhWxOPG-i1BBibAYBwmuUov38zrTMjV2PMhbxLPzRwpvAWC4xOjNLvYPcbAmZ4WynbwGNIGXtuhjEmL-xBjNzV1TQSU-E/s1600/photo+1.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is my "sticks cup." I have two cups because I have two classes since we departmentalize. My homeroom has McDonald on the cup and the other class has their homeroom teacher's name on the cup. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbjf-sqS4Vh6dbHWckFzg6saBOsRLGpIolHlIA-HDVbsu9HtnqmmPwH7C8SaKyCyzRObE-qRD3SJrvRGT6qzHsFM7DORTaAVRhj9-ly5qJC5w9-siHVGIV1-jTN0IVJ4sLVUCA4WpCbE4/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbjf-sqS4Vh6dbHWckFzg6saBOsRLGpIolHlIA-HDVbsu9HtnqmmPwH7C8SaKyCyzRObE-qRD3SJrvRGT6qzHsFM7DORTaAVRhj9-ly5qJC5w9-siHVGIV1-jTN0IVJ4sLVUCA4WpCbE4/s1600/photo+2.JPG" height="99" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is one of the sticks. I just used a blue and red sharpie for the dots. Easy and cheaper than buying actual dots to stick on it. </div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I have seen an idea where a toilet paper role has been used hidden inside the cup. Once a student answers a question the stick goes into the toilet paper role, which keeps the pulled sticks and unpulled sticks separate.<br />
<br />
If you use a different strategy for pulling sticks, I would love to hear about them in the comments!<br />
<br />
I hope you enjoyed!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hey guys! Today I want to share with you the 5 things I want to try in my classroom this year. Last year we went full common core in math and reading. After a year of getting my feet wet, I'm now ready to dive in and see how it goes. Here are the 5 things I'm wanting to try during my "diving in" process! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Number 1: Number Talks</b> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1935099655/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1935099655&linkCode=as2&tag=mrsmcds4thgra-20&linkId=N2P5SRYKUOBQYB4W"><img border="0" src="http://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=1935099655&Format=_SL160_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=mrsmcds4thgra-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=mrsmcds4thgra-20&l=as2&o=1&a=1935099655" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
During a recent math conference this book was brought to my attention as a great way to work on fluency and math strategies with students. This book has common core connections and is for grades K-5. I have talked my school into purchasing the book and am waiting very impatiently to get my hands on it! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Number 2: A Carpet </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001QVQB9Q/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B001QVQB9Q&linkCode=as2&tag=mrsmcds4thgra-20&linkId=O24RMKU56HB4S2OV"><img border="0" src="http://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B001QVQB9Q&Format=_SL160_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=mrsmcds4thgra-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=mrsmcds4thgra-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B001QVQB9Q" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This one may seem strange but hear me out! In my school only K-3 grades have a carpet in their classrooms. It was always thought to be "too young" for 4-5 grade. To better implement number talks from above I need a "meeting place". Thus I would really like to get a carpet this year. I have read many blogs about intermediate grades using carpets successfully. Of course when I go searching for them again, I can't find them. ::sigh:: Once I have implemented the carpet and number talks I promise to come back and report how it is working! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Number 3: Desk Organization</b> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCoSoGrz3a0Va4Zc5bWH2uGSWmHZk-fHiKQlLzRq1T0jZelxk5fZ55TC_C8cxXL9nalJBU95NsjiZvQ1HGfOB-SNBQLLDcOFGXkbn0BNLl1GFiu7AQqALu9Gp_n8LbZZtVj0cWH_wt7vU/s1600/DSC00670.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCoSoGrz3a0Va4Zc5bWH2uGSWmHZk-fHiKQlLzRq1T0jZelxk5fZ55TC_C8cxXL9nalJBU95NsjiZvQ1HGfOB-SNBQLLDcOFGXkbn0BNLl1GFiu7AQqALu9Gp_n8LbZZtVj0cWH_wt7vU/s1600/DSC00670.JPG" height="158" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I found a blog that had a really neat idea on how to keep desks organized when students switch classrooms. I am really hoping to try this this year to help keep the desks from becoming black holes. This idea can be found here: <a href="http://www.ashleigh-educationjourney.com/2013/06/organizational-tuesday-student-supplies.html">http://www.ashleigh-educationjourney.com</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Number 4: Fractions</b> </div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0941355330/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0941355330&linkCode=as2&tag=mrsmcds4thgra-20&linkId=754BIDOX2AHTWAXQ"><img border="0" src="http://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0941355330&Format=_SL160_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=mrsmcds4thgra-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=mrsmcds4thgra-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0941355330" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
During a recent math conference, this book was recommended to me for teaching fractions. In 4th grade CCSS fractions are a major focus. I really want to make sure I am teaching it in a way that my students will understand and comprehend, not just know how to find an answer. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Number 5: I Can... Bulletin Board </b></div>
<div>
I am really wanting to turn my small bulletin board into an I Can.. CCSS Bulletin Board. I have been posting my standards on my white board, but now that summer is here, I am ready to tackle the bulletin boards. There are MANY cute ideas on how to decorate or organize an I Can bulletin Board. I'm juggling ideas around in my mind and have decided that I will decided on July 1 (when I am allowed to go to the teacher store and purchase items for the new school year) what route I want to go. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
What are some ideas that you are hoping to try this school year?<br />
<br />
I hope you enjoyed!<br />

Hey Guys! I have been MIA for a couple months and have FINALLY sat down to write a blog post! One of the biggest reasons I have been absent is because I found out I was pregnant! We are extremely excited for this new chapter in our lives! I did however spend the first trimester snoozing on the couch as soon as I got home from school everyday because I was SO tired! However, I am officially in my second trimester and it's summer break so I am starting to feel much more energized!<br />
<br />
I have recently posted a new product on Teacherspayteachers.com that I hope you will check out!<br />

<br />
Hey guys. Today I wanted to tell you about a new toy that I bought to help teach moon phases. It's called Moon in My Room. This has been one of the neatest things to help teach moon phases. I hung it over the classroom door and after teaching moon phases we turned out the light, turned on the moon, and each student had to identify the moon phase being shown. The moon comes with a remote and I would sit in the back of the room, cycle through the phases, and stop on one at random. My students loved it, and I really feel that it helped improve their moon phase identifying skills. <br />

Today I want to talk about one of the activities I did when I was teaching complete metamorphosis this year! In fourth grade, students need to know the difference between complete and incomplete metamorphosis. They also need to be able to visually identify which metamorphosis an insect goes through. For this activity I had students compare and contrast the life cycle of a butterfly and a ladybug. I have a real specimen of a butterfly life cycle and a plastic specimen of the ladybug.<br />
<br />
First, I had the students draw the different stages of both insects.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWY5o808aku2Az8wdtSWxRd_sA2BEROUBY-Hhpeu7WQd9tq6JOrx9zeMXP_JZyukwW1UDgeKFDSCfM5yaq3Z7PbJ-9jytBJ6FsH5H-0OmntW9YBlG0OX7sD71agveqAIrgROeOXQpFLD0/s1600/2013-10-22+16.44.11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWY5o808aku2Az8wdtSWxRd_sA2BEROUBY-Hhpeu7WQd9tq6JOrx9zeMXP_JZyukwW1UDgeKFDSCfM5yaq3Z7PbJ-9jytBJ6FsH5H-0OmntW9YBlG0OX7sD71agveqAIrgROeOXQpFLD0/s320/2013-10-22+16.44.11.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Second, they had to answer question comparing and contrasting the butterfly life cycle with the lady bug life cycle. </div>

Today I want to share with you a fundraiser that we have been doing at my school the last couple of years. Each class receives a pumpkin and they decorate it however they like. The pumpkins are then displayed in the hallway and voted on. The class with the highest votes get a pizza party. Each vote is worth one dollar. Last year we used real pumpkins and ended up with rotting pumpkins in our hallway, which I do not recommend! This year we used fake carvable pumpkins, which have turned out really cute. Here are some of the great pumpkins the classes came up with this year! <br />

With common core implementation, we as teachers, have been asked to have our students use accountable talk in the classroom. To help implement accountable talk, our Special Education teacher created these posters to help prompt students during lessons. She has been so gracious as to allow me to share these posters with you also.<br /><br />I printed my accountable talk posters on colored card stock, cut them out, and hung them around my white board. I hope you enjoy. </span><div>

Today I want to share with you a letter that I sent home to my students to introduce myself. In years past, students were able to meet their next year's teacher on the last day of school. This was the first year that the teacher assignment was not told until July. I thought writing a letter would be a cute way to have parents and students get to know me a little and hopefully get them excited about the upcoming school year!<br />

Today I want to share my new A.R. bulletin board with you. Every year I change out this board according to our A.R. theme. This year's theme is "On the Road to Reading". Each teacher had to choose a state to represent on this "road." I choose Kansas! I mainly chose Kansas because I wanted to do something with the Wizard of Oz. To go with my Kansas/Wizard of Oz theme I chose to do my A.R. board with a hot air balloons! I think it turned out pretty cute!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb5kKvvW9ouqSgVU-KmBg5oxGG7fxDcqUO84E6bS7x1ILvDWrsaN0WJnDqZUNfuBd0CktsD-x-NfvNiFgN1KmUlMPkDvy6A7qjKKGUCOX-q9bzmIn_4NwMG4omvvfLgjRkeA7YXibB97k/s1600/2013-07-24+19.18.48.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="315" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb5kKvvW9ouqSgVU-KmBg5oxGG7fxDcqUO84E6bS7x1ILvDWrsaN0WJnDqZUNfuBd0CktsD-x-NfvNiFgN1KmUlMPkDvy6A7qjKKGUCOX-q9bzmIn_4NwMG4omvvfLgjRkeA7YXibB97k/s320/2013-07-24+19.18.48.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<br />
I bought the hot air balloon bulletin board set <a href="http://shop.schoolbox.com/18068-hot-air-balloons-bulletin-board-set-cd110163?keyword=hot+air">here.</a> This is what the set looks like...<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the clouds it has the point clubs. When the student reaches a point club they get to choose one of the smaller air balloons, I'll write their name on it, and then place it by the correct point club cloud. I drew one cloud by hand and then traced it so that the clouds would have a similar look. </div>

Hey guys! Today I want to share with you something I plan to do this year for my students to get to know me better on the first day. I got the idea for this at the end of this past school year. I was doing end of the year activities with my students and was thinking to myself how much I was going to miss them. By the end of the year, my students seem to be able to read my mind. After searching through pinterest for end of the year ideas, I came across several packets that have students fill out information for next year's class. Kind of a survival guide from a previous student. I thought it was a super cute idea, but wanted to make it more of a whole class project. I decided to have my students make a top 10 list of things new students need to know about being in my class. The kids loved it! I complied their answers into the most common responses and made a list. I plan on using this list on the first day of school, to better help my new students get to know me better.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Even though it is summer you can still use this idea for the beginning of the year. Just come up with 10 things that your students need to know. You can make them funny, silly, or serious. Then next year you can have your kiddos make one for you. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here is an example you can use to create your own top 10... </div>
<div>
10. If you are nice to her, she will be nice to you. </div>
<div>
9. Mrs. McDonald likes to sing. </div>
<div>
8. When she says "eyeballs", she means stop and look at her. </div>
<div>
7. Mrs. McDonald loves hugs!</div>
<div>
6. Mrs. McDonald LOVES polka dots. </div>
<div>
5. Mrs. McDonald does not like for you to talk in the hall, but she gives the best line walker a piece of candy. </div>
<div>
4. Do not talk when Mrs. McDonald is talking. </div>
<div>
3. She gives you another chance so that you can learn from your mistake. </div>
<div>
2. When Mrs. McDonald asks you to do something, do it the first time.</div>
<div>
1. She lets you play games when you are done with your work. -Educational Games :-)<br />

This summer I have been doing lots of work to prepare for the upcoming Common Core implementation for our county. I found these cute mathematical practices posters that correlate with the 8 mathematical practices of common core. There are posters for K-1, 2-3, and 4-5 that are written in kid-friendly terms. I've included the links below so you can check them out! These would be great to help explain to the students what test graders are looking for on their constructed response assessments!<br />
